History of Erectile Dysfunction Treatment and the Role of Cialis

Those who like to repeat that in olden times people were healthier, the grass was greener and the sun was brighter, are obviously dissembling. Especially this is true for the allegedly cast-iron constitution of the Ancient Greeks and Ancient Romans, who were never sick. In fact, people have had health problems at all times, though methods of treatment changed throughout the history.

Men’s health also known as men’s power or potency has always been one of the touchiest problems for the stronger sex. In the Ancient Greece and Ancient, Rome impotence was treated mainly with herbs. Also, ancient men believed in gods, who could take their sexual power for some reasons. The Middle Ages are famous for the so-called “witch wars”. Then men believed that to return sex power they needed to burn a witch. Due to the widespread occurrence of sexually transmitted diseases, disorders of sexual functions were quite a usual thing.

The 19th century was marked by the first scientific attempts of ED treatment. That was the period of experiments. Scientists tried to cure impotence with the help of bloodletting and leechcraft. Some later there was a popular theory, which said that in order to restore the sexual function, a man should abstain from sex for a year. Some researchers tried to cure the disorder with the help of electric current. Unfortunately, all these methods proved absolutely ineffective.

In the 20th century, all branches of medical science developed rapidly. Starting from the 1950-es, the most popular method of impotence treatment was an injection. The injections were made right in the penis and were rather painful. The effect was immediate and rather prominent, but this method had some obvious disadvantages. Erection didn’t depend on the man’s sexual desire and lasted till the effect of the drug lasted. Nowadays injections are still used, but very rarely.

One more popular technique of ED treatment was vacuum therapy, which allowed to stimulate filling up the cavernous body of the penis with blood with the help of a special pump.

A revolution in the field of ED treatment occurred in 1993 when American researchers accidentally discovered PDE-5 inhibitors, in particular, sildenafil. The first oral drug from impotence – Viagra was a real breakthrough in medicine. For the first time in the history erectile dysfunction was treated so simple and effectively, without painful injections and other terrible procedures. Just one small pill can completely restore the sexual function.

Nevertheless, researchers moved on and continued seeking for an ideal drug. So, in 2003, Cialis appeared. Its main ingredient – tadalafil – also relates to the category of PDE-5 inhibitors, and its effect lasts for up to 36 hours. Just imagine – one small tab – lets forget about problems with erection for two days! No surprise that today Cialis is considered one of the most progressive, effective and safe drugs for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. However, researchers continue working, and who knows, what there will be in some years.
